“In order for me to predict my future, I have to create it.” ~Dr. Eveangel Savage

Dr. Eveangel Savage earned her PhD in Social & Community Services from Capella University. She is the founding director of CasebyCase Research Foundation and president of Audacity Group Social Enterprise. With a focus on industry-specific research, she provides social enterprise training that helps leaders shape their firms and develop their initiatives for social good.

In this episode Dr. Eveangel shares her passion for empowering her community and making a difference through entrepreneurship.

Providing Access to Resources and Opportunity to Start a Business

Dr. Savage’s organizations are designed to help people who have previous history in the criminal justice system gain access to entrepreneurship. Her programs include courses that teach skills needed to start and successfully operate a small business. She also offers affordable business-building coaching services. She encourages her students to utilize their innate skills and abilities to create enterprise and “own their own stage”.

Your Workforce Skills Are Far More Valuable Than the Role You Play in a Corporation

Dr. Savage reminds you of the value in your workforce skills and the fact that you take them with you wherever you go. Quite often people get caught up in the present moment, wondering why they have a certain job, why they can’t move up or do something that they love. Instead, she suggests that you look at all of the years of experience and skills you’ve gained that you can apply in your business.

Matt Mawhinney has an extensive background in sales and marketing and has held positions within multiple levels of government. In 2015 Matt was introduced to the world of podcasting by his twin brother, Marc, who hosts a popular daily podcast for coaches. Matt realized how much effort is required to produce a successful podcast and knew that he could offer the perfect solution for podcasters.

Matt left his corporate job soon after and launched PodAssist, a company that offers “affordable, done-for-you podcasting services”. His mission is to save podcasters’ time and energy so they can focus on delivering their messages to the world.

In this episode, Matt shares his transition from corporate to the world of entrepreneurship and more.

How Matt Felt After He Left the Security of His Corporate Job

Matt admits to being a non-risk taker in his career. Deep down he wanted to have a business of his own, but he hadn’t found the right vehicle. Matt was just about ready to accept that he would be an employee forever, and then he came up with the idea of starting PodAssist. He wrestled with common fears that are typical for new entrepreneurs – like the fear of not having enough clients and making enough money – but Matt didn’t let that stop him.

Matt’s Strategy for Building PodAssist

When Matt decided that he was ready to start PodAssist, he didn’t stay at his job and build his business on the side. Matt left his job on a Friday and jumped into setting up his business systems the same night. He knew that he would have to hustle to make it work, and he did!

***Side Note: Matt’s story is unique. There is value in hearing his story and taking away what you can apply to your life. In no way is this episode encouraging you to leave your job without making sure that it’s the right choice for you and your situation.

Golden Takeaway from Matt’s Story

Matt took massive action when he launched PodAssist. He didn’t waste any time waiting and hoping that people would find him. Matt started having conversations with potential clients immediately. Some people were ready for his services then, while others weren’t. The golden takeaway here is that you have to go out there and hustle because no one’s going to just hand it to you.

Matt’s 5 Tips for Aspiring Podcasters

  1. Don’t be intimidated by podcasting.
  2. Join a community or reach out to seasoned podcasters and ask questions.
  3. Be consistent with the releasing of your episodes.
  4. If you decide to outsource editing, don’t go with the cheapest company. Do what fits within your budget, but remember that you get what you pay for.
  5. Research editing companies for a la carte services as well as customized packages.

Matt’s Personal Success Habits

While Matt was still working in his corporate job he used visualization to help him “see” how his life would be once he was able to leave his job and pursue his dream.  This powerful technique can help you envision what you want and pull you in the direction of obtaining it.

Matt’s Recommended Reading

Matt credits the book, Who Moved My Cheese?: An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life , by Dr. Spencer Johnson for helping him get through a difficult time in his life and shifting his perspective about change and how to deal with it.

Matt’s Projects

Currently Matt is excited about expanding his team over at PodAssist. He’s looking forward to growing his business and helping more podcasters with their shows.

Line Brunet is the CEO of CRAVE radio network and host of Find Your Groove, which airs live on Bold Radio Station. She is a speaker and a personal power and spiritual coach. Line is also a vibrant mom and wife, and she is recognized as a passionate connector of people.

In this episode, Line takes you on her personal journey of fulfillment, the process she went through to rediscover what she loves, and the bold steps she took to claim her happiness and freedom from corporate America. You’ll be inspired by how she spoke her dream into existence and answered her calling.

How Line Transitioned out of Corporate America

While working in corporate America, Line felt that there was something more. She had forgotten what she really wanted but also knew that quitting her job wasn’t an option. She often told herself how much she wished that she could leave her job and still earn enough money.

Then one day, out of the blue, Line woke up and wasn’t able to get out of bed. Eventually she was forced to leave her job. Instead of being worried about how she would manage being unemployed, Line was ecstatic! Her wish had been granted – she no longer had to go to that job AND she would still have money coming in.

It was in that moment that Line understood the power in her words.

How Line Launched Her Online Coaching Business

Line admits that her first year as a new coach was a huge learning curve. She was learning and trying to implement what she learned at the same time. She offered some of her coaching for free to gain experience and build up her confidence. To get the word about her new business out, Line talked to everybody!

Line’s “A-ha Moment” and Turning Point in Her Business

It wasn’t long before Line became overwhelmed – she was listening to all the gurus who were telling her that she had to use every tool and be on every social media platform in order to build a successful coaching business.

Things got so bad for Line that she was about to quit her business!

So she stopped and reminded herself of how much she loves coaching. Instead of throwing in the towel, Line decided that she would do it her way!

In an effort to simplify her business, Line began unsubscribing from email lists, opting out of software, apps, and scaling down to use only the tools that were easiest and most effective for her business.

That’s when she began having fun in her business again.

Golden Nugget:  There are a lot of tools that you can use to build your business. Find a few that to use consistently. Master them and make sure they work before you start adding more things into the mix.

How Line Balanced Being Mommy and Building Her Business

She scheduled her time and worked in her business while her son was in school.

She set clear boundaries for her business and family time. Sundays were off limits as they were dedicated to her family.

Line accepted that she had to build her business at a slower pace since her son and her husband were her priorities. Although this was frustrating at times, Line accepted it and made the best out of her situation.

Most Important Lesson Line Has Learned in the Pursuit of Her Dreams

Listen to yourself. You are the expert of your life and your business and you know what’s best for you.

Line’s Suggested Books to Read

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou

The Fire Starter Sessions, by Danielle LaPorte. Line thinks this is a great foundational book for new entrepreneurs, encouraging them to build their business their way.

Line is excited about her CRAVE Radio Network and her new hosts.

Jennifer Foxworthy proudly served in the United States Navy for 21 years as a Chief Petty Officer (E-7). Now in her second career, Jennifer is excited about being a powerful motivational speaker.

She is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Inspirationally Speaking, LLC as well as Founder of the Unstoppable You Women’s Conference.  Jennifer is a published author of her book, Tomorrow My Sunshine Will Come: Memoirs of Women Who Survived Domestic Violence, a prolific blogger, and the host of her television show, Living Unshackled ON Purpose.

In addition to all of that, Jennifer is a proud wife and mother. She is also living proof that dreams, passions and goals are obtainable if you trust in God, surround yourself with positive people, and put one foot in front of the other.

In this episode Jennifer shares her journey to becoming a powerful motivational speaker and tips to help you get started down this path.

Jennifer’s Transition into Professional Speaking

Jennifer gained experience and confidence in public speaking throughout her naval career. When she decided that she wanted to pursue motivational speaking as her second career, Jennifer spoke her goal into the atmosphere and started telling people about it.

She was introduced to Toastmasters, where she developed her public speaking skills and became a polished speaker.

Although Jennifer did not have formal speaker training, she modeled her style after speakers whom she admired. She eventually learned how to craft her story in a way that kept her audience engaged.

Jennifer’s Advice for Aspiring Motivational Speakers

If you want to command a certain speaking fee, you have to perfect your craft, present well, and demonstrate why you should be hired out of all the speakers who can deliver a similar message.

Identify your target audience and develop your signature talk.

Create your mission statement and your vision.

Set a goal for the number of speaking engagements you want to deliver during the year.

Be prepared to speak for free when you’re just getting started.

As you gain more experience, you will increase your fees and/or adjust them according to your expenses.

Don’t be afraid to ask your clients if they have a budget. If they don’t have a budget, you can get creative and decide how to make that opportunity work for you.

Attend events and conferences where you can network with leaders and make new connections.

Jennifer’s Top 3 Tips to Help You Start Your Speaking Career:

  1. Do your research and decide how you’re going to step out as a speaker. Write your business plan after your research is complete.
  2. Invest in professional marketing materials to help people remember you.
  3. Network and get your name out there.

Jewell Robinson was inspired by her parents to dream big, think big, and do big. She earned a political science degree from the University of Georgia and has over 17 years of service in the United States Marine Corps.

As a Financial Specialist, Jewell’s daily mission is to educate people about the psychological reasons behind unhealthy spending habits and coach them into achieving financial security.

In this episode, Jewell shares strategies to help you make smart money choices and get the most out of your tax refund.

Spenders vs. Savers: 5 Different Money Personality Types

Jewell broke down the most common money personality types and why it’s important to know which one you are and how you developed your personal habits.

Most people fit into one of these categories:

  • Natural spenders – they spend practically all of their money
  • Natural savers – they save practically all of their money
  • Spend first, save later
  • Save first, spend later
  • People who don’t make conscious money decisions – they often find $20 here or there because they left it laying around

How To Change Your Money Habits

The first step is to acknowledge your habits.

The second step is to determine how you developed your money habits. Were they learned during your childhood, based on how your parents treated money?

The third step is to focus and be intentional about changing them.

Jewell’s Suggestions for Getting the Most Out of Your Tax Refund

  1. Contribute to your retirement account.
  2. Start a medical expense fund for costs not covered by your health insurance.
  3. Set money aside for a well-deserved summer vacation.
  4. Set money aside to achieve a specific goal such as buying a home, graduation parties, buying a car, etc.
  5. Donate to your favorite charity.
  6. Pay off credit card debt.
  7. Start a college savings fund for your children or for yourself.
  8. Start a savings account for your children.
  9. Finish an existing home improvement project or start a new one.
  10. Contribute to your church fund, tithes, or missionary work.
  11. Start an investment fund.

Jewell reminds you to not get overwhelmed thinking about doing everything on her list. If you have bills that need to be paid, pay them first. Then make a smart choice about how you will allocate the rest of your tax return.

Start small, but just do something. Even if you have to start by saving $10 or $20 a month, that’s better than nothing.
